learn about the process

Photography is about the experience. From the moment you book a session, I guide you through choosing the best time of day for your shoot, location options, and understanding your vision for the session! I'm here to help along the way so that your session is stress-free, fun, and filled with smiles.

Photos are memories...snapshots in time.
My goal to capture the special moments, big smiles, and silly candids... all while having fun!

why choose me?

the details

When you inquire about your session or big day, we work together to book a date in the calendar. If you're looking for a portrait session, the time of day, morning or evening is decided at this time.

Choosing a date

Time and location can go hand-in-hand. Both mornings and sunset make for the most optimal natural light. However, it's important to think about the session type you're choosing and location.
TIME: With small children, we want to choose a time that they are most happy (after a nap, feed, etc.)
LOCATION: I'm here to help! If choosing a popular location, we may need to work around park hours or a time when it's least crowded. (Some locations do require permits.)

CHoosing a time & Location

I send you a questionnaire to help review details for your upcoming session. This is specific to your type of photo session. (If booking your wedding, this questionnaire will be more extensive and will provide sample timelines. I will also be there to help throughout the process.) It will include some tips for wardrobe and preparation details. In the event mother nature plans for rain on a portrait session date, it will include details for a rain-date. You'll also get a chance to share your vision, any must-have shots, and anything I should know prior.

prepping for your Big Day or session

WHAT SHOULD WE WEAR?
1. Compliment & Coordinate
When choosing outfits, choose outfits that you're comfortable in and compliment each other without looking too matchy-matchy. You can choose to do neutrals with a few pops of color, a softer palette that has different ranges in tone of the same shades, or bold. Patterns are also acceptable! Avoid harsh patterns or combining too many patterns on different people.

2. Suggestions:
I always suggest that the woman (especially mom if it's a family session) choose an outfit she feels confident and beautiful in. Then plan the color palette and everyone else's outfits from there.
If you have a fun patterned outfit you would like to use, limit the number of people in patterns. That way they will pop and still coordinate with everyone else. Multiple patterns can look busy, and this way they won't be competing with one another.
Add dimension and interest by mixing up the texture of the clothing material and accents.
Feel free to use cute little accessories such as scarves, hats, belts and basically anything with a fabulous texture. Accessories can pull together an outfit and make it look complete. Plus by switching up accessories and layers, you can get multiple looks without having to do complete outfit changes.
Keep our backdrop in mind when choosing your clothing. If we are in a grey room, avoid choosing grey as your color. If we are surrounded by fall leaves, layering in great textures is a fabulous option.
Most importantly, be sure to wear clothes you feel comfortable in. Your confidence will really shine through in your photos!

3. Try to Avoid:
          -Large logos
          -Large text
          -Neon colors
-Be aware of any tan lines and how those will look in your chosen outfit

And if you feel like you are in need of assistance, I am happy to help you! Arrange your outfits on a large bed or on the floor, and then send me photos of your favorite combinations. We can work together to ensure we find the perfect combination!

IS STUDIO PHOTOGRAPHY AVAILABLE?
Yes! An indoor studio option is available!

WHEN WILL I RECEIVE MY PHOTOS?
I edit and return your final gallery in a timely manner. Expect portrait galleries within 2 weeks of the session date. What about for weddings? Expect your gallery within 2 months of your wedding date (if not sooner!). Weddings also receive social media sneak peeks.

WHAT IF IT CALLS FOR RAIN ON MY SESSION DATE?
If it's a scheduled portrait session and the weather calls for more than 50% chance of rain, I will likely reschedule your session. Depending on the forecast, I may request a change of time that day or a rain check for another day. The overcast sky can sometimes be the most even light for portraits...so no need to bum out if it was a light sprinkle earlier that morning!

HOW MANY IMAGES WILL I RECEIVE?
For most portrait sessions, typically expect 70+ images.

WHAT TIME OF DAY SHOULD WE SCHEDULE THE SHOOT?
Morning and evening provide the best lighting for sessions. This helps avoid harsh sun and squinting AND provides gorgeous color and back light rather than shadows. If you have young children, I suggest trying to work around their schedule (when they are most happy) while keeping in mind the sun and lighting.

WHAT ARE YOUR FAVORITE LOCATIONS TO SHOOT?
I enjoy photographing in locations that are special to families. This may mean their home, a favorite park, or a location that gives them the feel they want. This may range from their own comfy couch to Old Town Alexandria or maybe a stroll through a spring garden.
